How to wash down jackets

Manufacturers often treat down jackets with hydrophobic, water-repellent coatings. Over time, dirt, abrasions, and daily use can reduce the effectiveness of this coating. Proper washing can help restore its water-repellent properties. Here are some tips for correctly washing and drying down jackets.

Tips for washing down jackets

First, check the manufacturer’s label on your jacket, as some jackets are not suitable for machine washing. If your jacket cannot be machine-washed and is labeled for dry cleaning only, you can use ozonation at SMARŽO laundromats to remove unwanted odors. Note that stains and dirt will not be removed through ozonation.

Check the pockets, close all the jacket’s zippers, and remove any attachments.

If the jacket isn’t too dirty on the outside but has, for example, accumulated sweat, wash it inside out and keep the zippers closed.

Do not wash the jacket with other clothes, as they may deform the jacket’s down filling. If the jacket is large and doesn’t have enough space to move freely in a 10 kg washing machine, use a 20 kg machine instead.

Place 2-4 tennis balls or laundry balls in the machine; they help prevent the down from clumping and help the jacket maintain its shape after washing.

Select the washing cycle recommended by the manufacturer’s label. If you can’t find the label, wash on a delicate cycle at 30°C.

After washing, transfer the jacket to the dryer and add tennis balls or laundry balls to prevent the down from clumping and to help it regain its original appearance.

Dry jackets on a low temperature setting. After the cycle ends, fluff them up.

Proper washing of down jackets will extend their lifespan and help them retain warmth on cold days.
